WHAT IS A CASINO BONUS?
Bonuses are incentives used by online casinos to attract new players. A bonus could take several forms. Many casinos offer a cash match on player deposits, some give new customers free spins as a fruit machine bonus. Occasionally, you’ll even find deals which give you free cash with no deposit needed.
Competition between casinos for new customers is fierce. That’s excellent news for players. Nevertheless, it’s essential to realise that not all bonuses represent a good deal for you. Any promotional offer will come with pages of terms and conditions. Make sure you read them before you sign up. We list key T&Cs under the offers featured on our site.
Below we look at some of the typical bonuses you’ll find online. I’ll explain the benefits and pitfalls of these deals. Please note, the text below represents ‘Typical’ deals you will encounter online. These are examples and not real promotions.
CASH MATCH BONUS
A ‘Cash Match’ is the type of bonus you’ll see advertised most often online. The promotion typically works like this: Deposit and spend £30 of your money with an online casino, and you receive an additional credit of £30, giving you a total of £60 to play the casinos games.
The amounts involved in a ‘Cash Match’ deal will vary from casino to casino. However, most websites cap the amount that can be matched. For instance, the maximum deposit match could be limited to £100.
It’s highly likely that any ‘Cash Match’ you get will come with many restrictions. You won’t be allowed to withdraw the bonus straight back into your bank account for instance. The casino could require you to risk the bonus cash several times before releasing it for withdrawal. They might even make you wager the money you’ve won with bonus cash multiple times before allowing withdrawal. These minimum wager requirements can range from 2x to 200x the bonus amount. Obviously, the lower number of times you have to wager the bonus, the better it is for you.
In general, the ‘Cash Match’ is a fair deal for the casino and new customer. You give a little, and you get a little. The important thing you need to watch with this type of deal is the ‘wagering requirement’. Check that the casino isn’t requiring you to play the bonus amount a ludicrous number of times before you sign up.
FREE SPIN BONUS
Another popular fruit machine bonus is the ‘Free Spin Deal’. Casino’s will offer new players who register free spins on their slots and fruit machines as an incentive to sign up. The number of free spins can range between 10 and 200.
The ‘Free Spins’ deal could be stand-alone or combined with a ‘Cash Match’. Typically, you’ll be required to deposit before you can claim the free spins. However, in my experience, the amount is modest. Expect to deposit between £5 and £10.
I like ‘Free Spin’ deals; they’re usually an excellent promo for new players. Unlike the ‘Cash Match’ offers, free spins don’t usually contain excessive wagering requirements. Nevertheless, it’s always worth checking this out before you jump in. Finally, it would be best if you compared the value of the free spins across different casinos. 10 free spins with a value of £1 are worth more than 30 free spins worth a penny!
NO DEPOSIT BONUS
At one time, No Deposit Bonuses were all over the internet. Back in the good old days, casinos would pay you to play their games! I suspect that the rampant abuse of the bonus by players is the main reason you just don’t see them anymore.
The only time I see ‘No Deposit Bonus’ these days is when online casinos with dubious reputations offer them. I would be doubly wary of any casino offering totally free cash – as they say ‘There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch’.
